John Heaston


John Heaston is the publisher/editor of Pioneer Publishing, a group of media channels, including The Reader, an alternative/metropolitan newsmonthly and El Perico, a bilingual community newsmonthly, plus PioneerMedia, a nation-leading, media-based digital agency and Grow with Google partner. Serving as a board member of the Mildred D. Brown Memorial Study Center, he helped transition the oldest Black female founded and run newspaper in the country — the Omaha Star — to nonprofit ownership. As president of his national trade group, the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, and board alternate to the National Association of Hispanic Publications, he has helped lead a collaboration with the Hispanic and Black Press..

Also locally active as a founder and board member of the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards, John involves himself in the community on various fronts and is a long-time member of Investigative Reporters & Editors. He is one of a handful of Google Trusted Photographers in Nebraska and serves on the development committee for the Malcolm X Memorial Birthsite Foundation.
